Abstract: In „The Convoy (XV)”, published in ALTCULTURE Magazine (no. 108, 2026) as an excerpt from Gheorghe Schwartz’s visionary speculative work, the narrative plunges deeper into the disorienting, meticulously engineered realities of life outside the collective march. Against a backdrop of silent surveillance, pervasive self-censorship, and automated transportation, the protagonist reflects on a tense encounter at a secluded niche table with a nervous, polarized-lens-wearing youth who has similarly abandoned the serpentine procession.
Blending sharp existential philosophy with Orwellian institutional critique, the text examines the friction between assigned covert missions, the illusion of free will, and the haunting psychological vacuum left behind by erased memories and cashless societies. As the protagonist navigates urban traffic toward a rendezvous at Konrad’s—haunted by fleeting glimpses of women seemingly vanished from the Convoy—the excerpt resonates as a profound exploration of human alienation, systemic control, and the desperate quest for individual identity in a totally programmed world.

I. TRUPUL ȘARPELUI
25.
Nu-i pot vedea ochii, dar mă intrigă cravata.

I. THE BODY OF THE SNAKE
25.
We sit down at a table in a niche. I can’t figure out the man’s profession. Dressed like me, he may have been anything before he was admitted to the snake’s body. He looks younger than me, wears a matching tie and polarized glasses. I can’t see his eyes, but the tie intrigues me. I don’t recall seeing anyone in a tie in Convoy. Without asking, we are brought coffee and water. When we sat, again, at a table with the gentleman who just left us, we didn’t get coffee. Does this mean that my partner now is important to them too? Since I got out of quarantine, I’ve gradually learned that „outside” nothing happens to us incidentally, that everything happens according to firmly established rules.

This time it’s not me who seems eager for conversation. The young man starts talking fast, as if he’s afraid I might leave him alone. His monologue is abrupt, he asks a question, doesn’t wait for an answer, and moves on to something else, makes confessions and expresses amazement. You can tell he’s having a tough time adjusting to his new life, he repeats that he didn’t expect one or the other, that he’s not what he used to be. He seems to want not confirmation but advice. I sip my coffee quietly, waiting for the torrent of words that burst like sparkling wine after the cork has been removed to pass. I’m increasingly convinced that the young man has been desperately looking for a conversation partner and hasn’t found one, just as he just did with the ” gentleman ” who left me too, in the middle of a sentence. It’s probably happened to him before with others and that’s why he’s obviously so fearful of me leaving him too. But suddenly he asks me a question he really expects an answer to: he asks me what made me leave the snake’s body.
So, it wasn’t just me who was recruited with the mission to find out! I had to figure this out for fear of not being able to have an enlightening discussion with another one of the snake’s body, from his behavior so similar to my own behavior. I tell him what I also told the post-Convoy constable who brought me to this hotel. The young man looks disappointed, he doesn’t think that habits are so important that you make a decision of such gravity as leaving a secure life to „plunge into insecurity”. So, I ask him in turn why he took that step.
– Because I felt I couldn’t accept spending my whole life marching in Convoy to an unknown destination. Even though I was free of the daily worries, it seemed to me that the price was far too high.
– So, what are you going to do next? He is silent. I hope you don’t mind my personal tone. We both came out of a community where there was no need for politeness in addressing. He’s silent as if the torrent of words had completely deserted him after the monologue just ended.
– I didn’t think it would be like this, he says later.
– What did you expect?
– I was hoping to continue the life I had before, using the experience I gained in the snake’s body.
– The life before?! Do you remember what you were before? He’s silent again. Now you’re sorry you took the big step? He’s silent again, and I don’t understand why someone who’s not at all clear about his experiences has been asked to find out something from others. I’m trying another way to get him to talk. I get up pretending to want to leave. The result is as expected, his voice returns, but a plaintive one.
– I no longer know either.
– Well, you said you hoped to carry on with your old life. It means you remember who you were, what you did, what you liked…
– No…, but I thought…, I hoped… His voice grows weepy.
– If you hoped to carry on the life you had before, at least you liked that life. He’s silent again. I wonder what they found in this man to give him the same mission they gave me? Just to be clear, I ask him if he has a car.
– Where would I get one? I just got out…

It means I was wrong, although the fact, that we were served coffee and he asked me what made me leave the snake’s body, doesn’t seem to have been accidental, just as nothing is accidental that we go through. We are programmed, but given free will, proof that we decide for ourselves whether to continue the march in the Convoy or leave it. I understand that they too are aware of this, that it worries them, that they are interested in how to proceed to have as few cases of abandonment of the body of the snake as possible, because this is the only way to validate the huge project aimed at restructuring life from the ground up. It has been admitted to me that there is opposition to the new way of life, that the opposition also resorts to violent diversions, such as „villains attacking men in robed Convoy clothes from those who have really come out of the body of the snake”, that the opposition uses those who did not resist the march as an argument.
I find it hard to collect my thoughts, knowing that they are being received, stored and processed. There has never been such a strict control. A permanent control that makes you constantly auto-censor yourself. You can only censor yourself by forcing yourself to abandon certain subjects, the very subjects that bother you. And by abandoning them, they disappear and the doubt that generated them disappears. There has never been a more effective weapon against resistance!

I have no choice but to wonder about the status of the bewildered young man in front of me, but it is not the only question. I feel again that everything, what’s troubling me, risks exploding if I try to eliminate the thoughts, forcing me to focus on something else. I can’t focus on anything else; I have no way to mask my interests. After all, I’m not one of the regime’s opponents, I have nothing to hide. It bothers me, for example, that I wonder why I don’t see any women coming out of the Convoy, that I wonder if that Convoy really exists and, if it doesn’t, what’s in it for the fairer sex? Does it bother why we don’t get our stolen memory back? Or why am I put to find out the main reasons why those who leave life carefree decide to leave the body of the serpent? Why me? And, since I have been given this mission, why have I not been given the tools to socialize with as many subjects as possible? For example, was I provided with a smart car, but not a minimum of funds to be able to enter places where I see people with clothes received in Convoy? The business card vibrates and conveys to me that to be effective in the world I have arrived in, it is necessary to teach myself what works differently than I have been taught, and to get used to dealing naturally with all that is new. Watch, I am told, what all the gadgets in your room are good for and use them. Neither can school preparation be done by getting all the information at the same time on the same day. Not even the elementary training! Is it so hard to notice that no one uses cash anymore? Do you still have to suffer not having notes and coins in your wallet?
I look at the young man in front of me. Why did he get a coffee, too, without asking? I can’t see his eyes behind the polarized lenses, but his desperation is more than obvious. Just a little while ago, I recognized myself in his behavior! Now I know that wasn’t the case and I wonder if he’s going to kill himself or join the „desperate mob”? When I give to get up, a girl appears next to our table, he livens up and they both leave. Eventually I see that it wasn’t I who left him „staring into the sun”, it was he who left me.

I leave the building too, I call out to the car, it comes promptly, I sit in the driver’s seat, the question mark appears on the dashboard screen, I focus on „Chez Konrad, ” I say „Go!” and as we pull into traffic, I keep wondering what the young man in the tie is wearing. All sorts of hypotheses run through my head, even that it wouldn’t be out of the question that he was sitting at a table with a fake who’d come out of the Convoy, though I don’t think one of those would venture to a place where he could be unmasked. I especially don’t think he’d come to such a place alone.
The car is doing a deft slalom through traffic, though I didn’t ask it to hurry. It stops at a stop sign, and I see in the parallel lane a car with a woman at the wheel, a woman looking like the one I spent a night with on Big Tuesday. I look towards her, she looks at me, but the columns start, and she speeds off. I ask my car to follow her, but the traffic is heavy, and my car isn’t so smart and clever every time either. He turns right at the junction: he has been ordered to take me to „Konrad”.
