Abstract: In „CONVOIUL (XIV)”, published in ALTCULTURE Magazine (no. 107, 2026), author Gheorghe Schwartz and translator Eugene Matzota present an excerpt centered on the protagonist’s profound disorientation, paranoia, and psychological exhaustion following his departure from the mysterious Convoiul.
Plagued by unsettling dreams of marching alongside shadowy guards and shifting figures, the protagonist wakes in his hotel room to find his locked door mysteriously ajar. Amid blinking signals from a neighboring building and a pervasive fear of losing his sanity or failing an unseen psychological test, he navigates the hotel spaces and encounters fellow survivors. Blending surreal psychological tension with kafkaesque uncertainty, the narrative explores isolation, memory loss, and the fragile boundaries between reality and hallucination.

I. TRUPUL ȘARPELUI
24.
Ieri? Parcă a trecut o veșnicie.

Adorm. Visez.
Somnul mi-a fugit definitiv.

Nu-i pot înțelege.

I. THE BODY OF THE SNAKE
24.
I turn on the TV, but don’t know how to use the remote to change the only program I can watch: a hard music station. After several unsuccessful attempts, I turn off the TV and try to learn more from the small radio I brought with me from quarantine. Here I can change frequencies, but I can’t find anything that might interest me. I leave the set on low and decide not to rack my brain for what’s to come: The future is usually much simpler than panicked thoughts about what will be: ‘When the future is unexpected, anticipatory thoughts aimed at a situation however probable, cannot foresee it’. Yes, but while you’re awake, you can’t hold your thoughts in check. I imagine I’m in „Chez Conrad” as I remember it, not the one I was in yesterday. Yesterday? Seems like forever ago.

I fall asleep. I dream. I dream I’m in the body of the snake. To my left walks the post-Convoy gendarme who whispers something in my ear. It amazes me how someone with clear tasks for the activity outside has entered the column. And to my right is a post-Convoy gendarme. I remember the warning that villains had infiltrated the post-Convoy gendarmes, but I have not been told how to detect them. That’s why I don’t feel at all safe with the man so close to my right. My suspicion grows when I see – or just think I see – the man holding a penknife in his hand. He keeps moving it from one hand to the other and grinning at me. I am now convinced that I am in great danger. Yet I’ve never witnessed an attack in the body of a snake. I seek support from the left-hand constable I know. The constable on the left is careful to keep pace, he only looks ahead, as if we were not even fellow marchers. Further to the man to my left steps the guard I had been in contact with for a long time before leaving the Convoy. He doesn’t respond to my questioning gaze either. I insist and see that he is not even the guard I have become accustomed to, but the general from the cabinet in the labyrinth, the general I did not part with very amicably, he left me without even saying hello. I don’t have time to wonder what the general is doing marching in the column that he turns into „my guard” again. In astonishment I let out a scream and wake up.
I half get up and, barely out of sleep, I have the impression that the door of my studio – room 287 – is closing. I vividly remember locking it behind me when I arrived. I always made sure, and sometimes more than once, that I locked the front door, especially after being warned of danger. I’m sure I turned the key in the lock. I get up, go to the door, the key is in the lock, press the knob and the door opens. I didn’t lock it?! I walk out into the corridor. There’s nobody there. I go back to the room, look at the clock, it’s not even four o’clock. I lock up and sit down in the armchair. Sleep has escaped me for good. The thought of someone breaking into my room gives me no peace, and I try to reassure myself that it was just an illusion. But why did I leave the door unlocked?
I wasn’t assaulted, and I can’t imagine what could have been stolen. The clothes, the clothes so tempting, hang neatly on the coat hanger in the closet. I take out my wallet and take everything out of it: a travel ticket for „ten trips anywhere”, three tickets left from the five for „accommodation in hotels of three stars or less”, my ID card with the details I only partially know. I can’t see anything missing. I’m afraid I’m starting to go mad; I’m seeing things, my washed-out brain shows no sign of returning my memories. I get out of my armchair and look out of the window. Downstairs, the street has changed its geometry again. Or perhaps what I see is also part of my alienation?

It’s five o’clock. It’s six o’clock. Behind some of the windows in the block across the street, the lights come on. I stand in the dark, I don’t pull aside the curtain, I see, but I can’t be seen. At a window one floor above, a light flashes. It doesn’t flicker, it flickers on and off at a certain rhythm. I’m convinced that someone there is signaling something. To whom? I’m increasingly afraid that I’m losing my mind, that I’m seeing things, that the hallucinations are making me stop judging like a normal person.
I’m sitting in the armchair again. Is it part of the scenario to induce states like the one I’m going through now? Is this another test? Taking it in stride, but remaining aware of the altered thinking, to be a test to see who resists and who doesn’t? And those who don’t resist to make up the 2% suicide percentage? The 2% who don’t accept their fate after emerging from the body of the serpent and live their failure deeply, not even having the strength to squeeze into the „mob of the hopeless hoping in vain to be welcomed into the convoy”? I neither want to join that „mob”, nor to commit suicide, nor to lose my mind, as I am about to do. I don’t want any of that, but I don’t know what I want either.
I go into the bathroom, take a shower, shave and… and I keep thinking and thinking about what to do next. I’ve got three days and three nights left in my hotel, I’ve got a smart car at my disposal, maybe if I can manage to give a satisfactory answer to the request I’ve been subjected to, things will take a positive turn. Which, for the moment, I cannot anticipate. Well, I don’t know what that future might look like, and I don’t know what I want it to look like! I just don’t think things can take a positive course for me if I don’t offer them something that will please THEM.

I go down to the breakfast room. At least here it’s not like the quarantine, where you don’t get to socialize and get your tray of food delivered to your room. Here I might have a chat with someone and produce a life-saving idea. The dining room is paved for later, when it will be busy with a wedding. The space is generous and there is room in one part for the Swedish buffet for hotel guests. That suits me, the tables are closer together, I can sit next to someone. Next to whom? Let’s see! First, I look for whoever is dressed in the Convoy clothes. I notice that no women are in this situation. It’s a discrimination whose logic I don’t understand. I remember that it was only on the occasion of the Big Tuesday that we had the opportunity to meet the women’s column. They too were wearing particularly good quality clothes, just not all exactly the same. And I also remember the column moving parallel to the convoy, a sort of mirror convoy. Those people were too far away, I couldn’t see if they were all men there too, I couldn’t see how they were dressed, I just watched their line moving slowly. Maybe the distance between us made us see them moving slowly, maybe they were walking at our pace too. Or, after all we’ve experienced today, maybe that „Convoy in the Mirror” was also nothing but an illusion.
I fill a tray with goodies from the buffet, set my plates on a table and get myself some more coffee and apple juice. Other guests have come for breakfast and the seats have filled up. Only at my table nobody else sits down. I stall and wait. In the end a young couple asks if they can sit next to me. I accept but am disappointed to see by the way they are dressed that I am not one of those who have left the body of the snake. And I am even more disappointed when, after a long pause, men in clothes like mine come in turn and sit at other tables. The pair seated next to me eat in silence. When they exchange a few words, they do so almost in a whisper. I can’t understand them. I don’t even think they speak in a language I know. But my attention is drawn to a paper bag in which they have brought some sachets. When they leave, they take it with them. I look around and see a stack of bags and a few boxes of sachets on a shelf next to the buffet. I clear the table, take a bag with me, and put a few sachets in it. Back in room 827 I investigate what I brought with me. The sachets appear to be pills with concentrates. I open one sachet and suck on a pill that tastes like… stuffed peppers. I sit in the armchair and as the pill slowly melts in my mouth, I try to plan my day. Instead, since I haven’t seen any women in the breakfast room dressed in Convoy clothes, I wonder if the women’s column wasn’t also just in my imagination. I don’t think so, in „The mob vainly hoping to be welcomed into the Convoy” I saw women and even children. They wouldn’t have persevered there if they hadn’t known that others had the chance to march.
I’m sorry I didn’t take more pills with concentrates. It would have saved me the worry of lunch.
I still don’t know what to do next.
In the lobby I run into the gentleman I managed to chat with yesterday. It wasn’t really a conversation. Now he’s with a man in a Convoy suit. He doesn’t seem to be very interested in that one either. I walk past them, we say hello. The „gentleman” leaves and leaves me with the man he was talking to. That one seems more eager for conversation.
