The Convoy (XII) by Gheorghe Schwartz
Translated by Eugene MATZOTA
ALTCULTURE MAGAZINE No. 105, 05/2026
Abstract:
In this introspective chapter, the protagonist navigates the unsettling reality of life after exiting the „Convoy”—a regimented, utopian-like structure he refers to as the „Body of the Serpent.” Trapped in a city that feels both alien and hauntingly familiar, he seeks refuge in a hotel lobby during a relentless rainstorm, searching for answers among other defectors. His attempt to decode the motives behind their „unthinkable” abandonment of a secure life culminates in a strained, enigmatic encounter with a fellow exile—a man of refined, diplomatic demeanor who embodies the very contradictions of their shared past.
Through their dialogue, the story masterfully explores the existential cost of uniformity, the illusion of personal initiative in a world governed by rigid hierarchies, and the subtle, psychological surveillance that transcends the boundaries of the Convoy itself. This segment serves as a profound meditation on the struggle to maintain one’s individuality—and the „small habits” that anchor it—within the crushing pressure of a controlled society.

I. TRUPUL ȘARPELUI
21.
Mi-a explicat, deși a precizat că el preferă tot vechiul KFC.

I. THE BODY OF THE SNAKE
21.
The next day I walked around the city, went into shops, tried to talk to people. I sat next to an old man on a bench in a park. I asked him to tell me how I could get to a Brown+ place. He explained, although he made it clear that he still preferred the old KFC. But a „Chez Conrad”? No, he „doesn’t hang out” at any „Conrad’s”. What about „Konrad’s”? „Chez Konrad” is out of his league. And even if he could afford that place, he wouldn’t be so stupid as to spend his money there. Well, that’s where great relationships are made and broken, I encourage him. I don’t care, I’ve got what I’ve got and I’m not venturing for more. After a pause he added that only a fool risks losing what he has. Further the discussion did not continue, although I deliberately chose an older man, telling myself that he had lived through the times through which I had lived. Only that he gradually, if not entirely, passed on to the changes that had occurred, while the technical news came upon me like a tsunami.

And something else, the man hardly masked his suspicion of me dressed in the clothes I had received in the Convoy. I don’t know whether he considered me a freak, because I had given up (or had been kicked out?) the privileged status for which the rest of mankind has to work so hard to give him everything people want, or he suspected me of being one of the robbers who had robbed an outcast from the great march. The conversation didn’t bond and, lo and behold, it started raining. My intention to retrieve information from the people on the street I had to find became unworkable. The park was my only accessible place to socialize, for anywhere else, a cafe or a local, I had no money.
The rain stung and I called the car. Which arrived almost instantly. I sat in the driver’s seat and the question mark appeared on the dashboard screen. I don’t know where to go. If I knew, the car would read my mind and stop posting that question mark.
I sit in the car and listen to the rain roar. I really don’t know what to do next. The rain has messed up the plans I’ve been making since I woke up. „When the future is unexpected, anticipatory thoughts aimed at a situation however likely, I cannot foresee it.”
I’ve been sitting in my car for a long time now without a clue where to go or what to do. I try to collect my thoughts. So, I am asked to prove why some abandon safe living for the uncertainty outside and produce solutions to make such cases as few as possible. Well, even if sometimes „the reckoning at home doesn’t match the reckoning at the fair”, you can’t help but push how to get on with your day, week, or life. If the rain shows no sign of stopping, if I don’t have the money to get anywhere, I decide to go back to the hotel, sit in one of the comfy armchairs in the lobby, wait for a new Convoy arrival or for someone who, like me, is already checked in to get off the elevator. To challenge him to tell me why he left the column, what prompted it, what he missed. Only if I find out from several people why they decided to take such a major step, I will be able to say that my hypothesis is correct and only then will I look for the solution to limit the „incomprehensible abandonment”.
So, I settle into an armchair and wait. At another table sit two pairs. They are not wearing Convoy clothes. Are there other people staying in this hotel? Possibly, considering the size of the building and the fact that the exits from Convoy are few. Exits from the Convoy are few, at least from what I saw while I was on the march, and from what I was told. Few and „unheard of”. To be even fewer or none at all I have come to enjoy a privileged situation here as well. Proof that, lo and behold, I find myself served with a coffee and a glass of water, although I did not ask for anything. Through the massive front door, I can see that the rain has not only not stopped, but it has also actually increased.
I’m sitting in my armchair and only two groups have come in from outside that don’t seem to have anything to do with the Convoy. They don’t go to the reception, but set up in the lobby, ask for coffee and drinks, presumably to find a place to get out of the storm. When the elevator finally comes down with someone dressed as Convoy, I wait to see where he’ll sit so I can approach him. He’s a man in between the ages, carrying the bag he got when he left quarantine, clearly leaving the hotel. He stops for a few moments to scan the place, looks at his watch, heads for the exit, returns. When I want to invite him to my table, a pair appears, and the man is clearly on a date. No hugs or even handshakes follow, just a not-so-friendly exchange of lines. They speak in hushed tones, I can’t hear their words, but it doesn’t seem remotely like a sequence of joyful reunion. A disappointment seems to come from both directions. However, the scene doesn’t drag on and the three of them leave together.
I’ve been sitting in my armchair for ages. The storm has subsided, but it’s still raining. Maybe it’s because of the weather that nobody comes, and nobody goes. It must be midday, the habit of a lunch at a fixed time makes me hungry. Since I’m staying here on charity, I get up with the intention of going up to the room where I still have some food in my quarantine bag. The rain and lounging in the hallway have also made me sleepy. I’ll get something to eat and go to bed. Finally, the much-desired siesta in Convoy now became possible. When I’m rested (from doing nothing…), maybe it will clear up and I’ll… „Anticipatory thoughts aimed at a situation however probable, cannot always foresee the future!” I wait for the elevator and when the door opens out comes the gentleman who left the quarantine before me and arrived here long after me. He signals to me that the car is empty, that I can go up, but I don’t. I stand still and he stops too. We sit facing each other. Anyone following us would imagine we’d met.
Although the clothes we receive in the Convoy are of the highest quality, they still make us easily identifiable as wearing uniforms. The man in front of me looks more like a diplomat’s suit. He is dressed in Convoy-issued clothing, though I distinctly remember seeing him emerge from quarantine in a smart dark blue suit. How is he now wearing the easily recognizable clothes of those of us who emerged from the serpent’s body? In astonishment I stand mute before him. He doesn’t push me aside so that he can pass and just stares at me silently. Of course he should be wearing diplomatic clothes, I tell myself, there is no impatience, no discomfort, nothing on his face. Just a slightly ironic look. (Or maybe it’s just me that he’s giving me a wry look.) We stand for a few seconds facing each other, and I keep wondering why the post-Convoy gendarme told me that this imposing man is „finished”.
The seconds tick slowly away before they become minutes, until my former quarantine colleague signals once more that the elevator is waiting for me. It’s an elegant way of asking me to step aside to let him pass. My mouth drops open, too, and I say, „Excuse me!” He nods and steps aside for me to enter the elevator car. But the scene was too long and before I take two steps, the door closes, and the elevator takes her up.

That’s too bad. Maybe if I were dressed like I was before, other memories would come back. Too bad I didn’t know.
At last, the dream talk seems to be coming together.
Sorry!” he says.
It’s a dialogue starter, I tell myself, and I’m anxious not to miss the opportunity to continue it.
Are you in a hurry? I ask him.
He looks at me with the same expressionless gaze.
Do we know each other? I point to his clothes. Yes, he says, like you, I’ve been there too. I notice the difference: „there” all of us in the column felt equal and we were silent. In fact, what do you want from me? Are you part of the post-Convoy gendarmerie?
No. You got out of quarantine before I did. I think a couple of days before me.
And?
And you got here after me. He kept looking at me the same way. If you’re not in a hurry, maybe you could give me a few minutes. Same look. I don’t know what you’re going to do next, but I think two of us might be able to work it out more easily. Silence. The man continues not to answer me. I turn away disappointed, he nods in greeting, walks to the entrance, looks at the rain, goes back into the hall, sits down at a table. I remain where we met, but no longer facing the elevator, but watching him. Him politely gesturing for me to sit at his table. I guess I reacted a little too quickly, almost running to the armchair he indicated. Finally, his face also relaxed into a shadow of a smile.
How come you’re no longer wearing the clothes you received? I heard myself ask him, as if that was the most important thing in which I was interested.
Haven’t you heard that Convoy clothes attract all sorts of villains? So, I asked for the suit I was admitted to the snake’s body in from quarantine. Lucky for me, it still fits.
I didn’t know I could ask for that.
The clothes I received are of very good quality, and if it weren’t for the danger with the villains, few people would be willing to exchange them for the ones they showed up in before they set off in the Convoy.
Is this a way of telling me that I was worse dressed before? Probably, otherwise I wouldn’t be nostalgic for “Chez Conrad”. But it doesn’t occur to me to be offended either.

22.
And the fact that I’ve arrived more slowly…
You don’t have to justify yourself to me!
I don’t have to justify myself. Besides, they know everything that happened to me, what I did, even how I thought in those situations. They also know what we’re thinking and talking about now.
It’s good, I tell myself, at least I don’t have to report to them. Suddenly, I feel like I’m part of the service too.
That’s why there’s no point in justifying ourselves, I say. Not to me, not to them, not to ourselves. That’s what I find most dangerous.
Why?
Because justifying ourselves to ourselves is the last ace up our sleeve. Talking to someone emerged from the serpent’s body finally takes place, I tell myself. Let’s leave it! I’m glad you agreed to sit down and talk because I stubbornly believe that in two – or even more – we could more easily overcome our immediate future.
Everyone’s immediate future is a personal matter.
Yes, but it seems that most of those who have left the Convoy are not doing very well. I think we can learn how to avoid failure. For example, if we shared our reason for giving up the safe life…
He looks at me, consults the watch on his hand, the conversation doesn’t suit him and is in danger of breaking down.
I guess it doesn’t rain so hard anymore, he says. I’m thinking of taking a short walk. I don’t know this town, though I often feel I’ve passed certain buildings before.
I have the same impression, I’m in a desperate hurry not to let the thread break. I think I have come out of the body of the snake because there was nothing to hold on to, everything came ready-made.
That was the least unpleasant thing. He speaks clearly, with perfect diction.
For me, the unpleasant thing was that, although I had all the amenities, I couldn’t have precisely my little habits, the ones that kept me afloat during the hardest moments of my pre-Convoy life.
I didn’t live for those „little habits”! I had – and still have – other motivations.
But you also had the habits that made your life more enjoyable. And the last homeless man is tightly bound to life by his habits, the only ones that keep him going.
That may be, but I’ll tell you again, it’s not „little habits” that have kept me alive!
I had nothing else to reproach them for.
It bothered me…, first of all, it bothered me the rigorous surveillance we were subjected to….
The rigorous surveillance in the Convoy is no less rigorous here, outside it, since they have control over our thoughts. For all that, it wasn’t worth getting out of line.
…Secondly, it bothered me that we were all treated equally, as if an army of clones was marching…
Here it’s true, with all the caveat that we live in a democratic world outside, the differences between those who frequent „Chez Conrad” and those who waste their money and time at „Chez Konrad” are more than apparent. But when I encounter crowds of desperate people vainly begging for a place in the Convoy, I seem to prefer the equal treatment of the snake’s body. And I’m not the only one who thinks so, proof that there are so few of us who have decided to get out of the queue.
…Thirdly, we could no longer bear the fact that everything came to us ready-made, which eliminated the possibility of any personal initiative. I felt like a robot carrying in a disciplined manner out an imposed program.
I, in a single day in the city, realized that even outside the body of the snake, the entire population „in a disciplined manner fulfills an imposed program”. Imposed by the most rigorous hierarchies. Forgive me, but I don’t think all this has made you leave the Convoy.
Do you know better than I why I took this big step?!
I don’t know. But I don’t think you do either.
Well, then explain to me why you left the column!
But I told you from the beginning of our conversation because I couldn’t have my little habits, the ones that kept me afloat during the hardest moments of my life before the Convoy. I think so, although I may be wrong, although the „big step”, as you so correctly called it, you don’t take it consciously unless you have a solid motivation. And I can assure you that I did it absolutely consciously.

The „diplomat” consults his watch again and looks through the big windows to see if it is still raining. It’s still raining. After the discussion with the post-Convoy gendarme, I imagine that the elegant man in front of me has not been provided with a smart car. After our brief conversation, I don’t think he’ll say any more than he has so far, so I decide not to invite him into my car, although there I could question him at length. I’m sure he wouldn’t tell me anything useful. I’ll give it another try, though:
Thank you for your time. If I am not convinced why you have emerged from the snake’s body, and I see that you are not satisfied with my explanations either, then there must be another motivation, a common one for the „big step”. If we found this out, I’m sure it would help…. I won’t go on; I notice he’s no longer paying attention to what I say. Indeed, he stands up, salutes, and goes out into the street.
I remain in the armchair with my sentence interrupted and my thoughts. Coffee and a glass of water appear on the table again. Not ordered by me. While I was not alone, I was not served like this. Now I suppose I am rewarded for the „work” I have done.
Even though perhaps on probation, for now I have become one of them.
