în care este vorba tot despre lumea cea mare și nesfârșită, arătându-se acum cu precădere că doctorul Gough știa de la început că sfârșitul lucrurilor nu este mai adevărat decât fundul dublu al unui cufăr cu nenumărate funduri duble, așa cum personal obișnuia să se exprime ori de câte ori dădea, între două asemenea funduri, de Finch, tolănit indolent în acele locuri și, de asemenea, se mai arată în această carte cum înțelepții lumii, călăuziți de aceste adevăruri, au fost în stare să-și termine gândurile; precum ni se arată chiar și ce au gândit ei.

Gough. Dumnezeu a făcut lumea. Nimeni nu-l cunoaște pe Dumnezeu, dar lumea este știută de noi toți. Dumnezeu supraviețuiește prin lume. Gough este o părticică a acestei lumi. Gough este o parte a dumnezeirii și Dumnezeu însuși. Dumnezeu este Gough și Gough este Dumnezeu. Dar Dumnezeu sunt și eu, așa că eu sunt Gough, fratele meu și nepoata mea și bunica. Eu sunt întregul univers și eternitate. Eu sunt Dumnezeu.
Când am creat globul pământesc și soarele și luna și florile, animalele și păsările, și, pe urmă, și pe mine, ca o chintesență a întregii lumi, mi-am dat seama că nu voi fi numai Homer și Phidias, Galileu și Giordano Bruno, Michelangelo și Faust. Eu am fost și Savonarola, și Gingis Han, și calul acestuia și urina eliminată de acest cal. Sunt în aceeași măsură și Shakespeare și Kurtz Mahler, sunt cel mai mare masochist, în măsura în care sunt și cel mai mare sadic, bestie, brută, pruncucigaș și paricid.
Eu sunt Dumnezeu. Dumnezeu sunt eu. Dumnezeu sunt eu.
M-au dus la balamuc și m-au închis într-o cameră cu gratii. Le-am repetat de atâtea ori: “Eu sunt Dumnezeu: Îngenuncheați, necredincioșilor, în fața mea!” Ei dădeau din umeri și mă legau. La început m-am mâniat și i-am blestemat. Apoi mi-a fost milă de ei: mi-am adus minte că ei sunt și eu, că eu sunt și ei. Am fost fericit când mă băteau. Meritam.
Cu timpul, însă, n-am mai putut să rabd. Aerul a devenit înăbușitor în cămara mea și loviturile lor mă dureau tot mai tare. Iar printre gratii vedeam ramurile de măr în floare. Într-o zi m-am simțit obosit și nu le-am mai spus că sunt Dumnezeu. Sunt doar un amărât bolnav și istovit. Au zâmbit cu îngăduință și mi-au dat drumul.
Astăzi sunt contabil la un mare trust, unde mă duc în fiecare dimineață și mă întorc la ora trei după-amiază. Vara mi-e cald și iarna mi-e frig.
Și chiar de se va mai naște cineva după mine – poate că o să se mai nască, totuși, cineva, – niciodată nu se va mai putea crea o lume, pentru că lumea sunt eu, iar eu am murit.

Bătrânul scriitor Gough, invitat la școală, ședea în ultima bancă și asculta desfășurarea lecției în care copiii analizau una dintre nuvelele sale. La un moment dat, profesoara provocă un elev:
– De ce crezi tu că a pus autorul numele Victoria eroinei principale?
Elevul întrebat roși până în vârful urechilor și-și aținti ochii în dușumea. Alți copii au răspuns la întrebare și, până la urmă, profesoara s-a arătat mulțumită de pregătirea clasei.
Pe elevul cel leneș l-a pedepsit, punându-l să scrie de douăzeci de ori: “Victoria reprezintă simbolul biruinței omului ingenuu asupra mârșăviei și răului întruchipate în această nuvelă de personajul Finch Lupu.”
A doua zi, scriitorul a trimis și el un caiet doamnei profesoare. Pe filele unui maculator era notat de douăzeci de ori: “Victoria reprezintă simbolul biruinței omului ingenuu asupra mârșăviei și răului întruchipate în această nuvelă de personajul Finch Lupu.”

Gough. God made the world. No one knows God, but the world is known to all of us. God survives through the world. Gough is a part of this world. Gough is a part of the godhead and God himself. God is Gough and Gough is God. But God is also me, so I am Gough, my brother and my niece and my grandmother. I am the whole universe and eternity. I am God.
When I created the globe, the sun, the moon, the flowers, the animals, and the birds, and then myself, as a quintessence of the entire world, I realized that I would not only be Homer and Phidias, Galileo and Giordano Bruno, Michelangelo, and Faust. And even if someone else is born after me – maybe someone else will be born after me, though – a world can never be created, because the world is me, and I have died.

The Punishment

The old writer Gough, invited to school, sat in the last bench, and listened to the lesson unfold as the children analyzed one of his novels.
At one point, the teacher challenges a pupil:
Why do you think the author named the main heroine Victoria?
The pupil blushed and looked at the floor. Other children answered the question, and eventually the teacher was pleased with the class’s preparation.
She punished the lazy pupil by making him write twenty times: „Victoria is the symbol of the victory of the ingenuous man over the wickedness and evil embodied in this novel by the character Finch Wolf.”
The next day, the writer also sent a notebook to the teacher. On the pages of a small paper was written twenty times: „Victoria is the symbol of the victory of the ingenuous man over the wickedness and evil embodied in this novel by the character Finch Wolf.”
