Totuși, excursia

Gough era unanim socotit un om foarte instruit. Călătorea mult, cunoștea numeroase cuvinte străine și știa unde se găsesc ciorapi de damă mai ieftini.
În anul acela, plecă în excursie cu un grup organizat. Au vizitat împreună tot orașul. La început, muzeul de artă, apoi muzeul de istorie, apoi muzeul de științe naturale, apoi câteva case muzeu* și, la sfârșit, câteva expoziții industriale, economice, de curiozități și alte colecții de lucruri demne de văzut.
În zilele următoare, au vizitat bisericile, monumentele istorice și principalele obiective economice. În continuare programului, au făcut excursii în împrejurimi, de-a lungul râului și pe culmile din jurul orașului. După care au fost la teatru, la operă și la filarmonică. La cinematografe n-au fost pentru că filme se pot vedea și acasă.
Seara și dimineața, au mâncat la diferite localuri, iar la prânz, mereu la alt restaurant. Profitând de zilele călduroase, au fost la ștrand și pe litoral. Au mai vizitat două școli model, universitatea și un spital. În mod excepțional, li s-a permis să asiste la o operație de apendicită și la mulgerea automată a unei veci de rasă într-o fermă zootehnică.
În cea de-a treisprezece zi, au vizitat cimitirul. Era programată înmormântarea unei celebre actrițe care s-a sinucis din motive sentimentale. Mulțimii de gură-cască i se adăugase și grupul de excursioniști. Din cauza epidemiei, în ziua aceea mai erau prevăzute șapte înmormântări.
De aceea, ritmul de înhumare fusese accelerat și aparținătorii diferitelor sicrie și coroane se amestecară între ei. Toate procesiunile erau blocate de un car mortuar, deocamdată gol, pentru că, deși medicii au asigurat că “nu mai e nici o speranță”, cel care trebuia să ocupe sicriul era de trei zile abia în comă. În așteptarea mortului, mulțimea îngroșă rândurile celor ce priveau la trecerea turului ciclist prin fața cimitirului. Din nefericire, tocmai când sosiră cicliștii și când o ambulanță aducea trupul așteptatului mort, excursioniștilor li se termină timpul disponibil, întrucât aveau program la expoziția de grafică modernă. Încercând să iasă pe poarta cimitirului, autobuzul excursioniștilor lovi ambulanța, provocând o busculadă printre cicliști. Mașinile însoțitoare frânară pe trotuar, iar oamenii năvăliră unii peste alții în cimitir, în vreme ce caii dricului, speriați, porniră în galop.
Gough regretă că excursia se termină, din nefericire, tocmai în ziua următoare și n-a mai rămas timp pentru vizitarea locurilor ce purtau vestigiile acestor tragice incidente. Își vându, însă, bine lucrurile aduse cu el, iar pentru anul următor își programă o excursie în Insulele Franz Iosif*.
- * Pentru că așa se cade…
** Asta numai fiindcă biletele de intrare erau cuprinse în costul excursiei. Oricum, Gough nu ea singurul din grup care ar fi preferat să colinde prăvăliile.
*** Şi pentru această manifestare biletele fuseseră plătite cu mult timp înainte (spre disperarea lui Gough).
**** Acolo se puteau vizita cele mai ciudate peșteri, celebrul muzeu al amnarului, iar prețurile ceasurilor deșteptătoare sunt cele mai mici din lume.
SCAUNUL

Totul se cristalizase în mintea lui Gough, după ce a văzut a opta oară filmul în care un tânăr moștenește o colosală avere de la niște părinți pe care îi întâlnește întâmplător abia după ce a trecut prin numeroase și crâncene peripeții. Drept urmare, a formulat ipoteza că n-ar fi deloc exclus să se pomenească și el cu o asemenea pleașcă. E drept că părinții lui divorțaseră de mult și că nu prea aveau cine știe ce castele să-i lase lui Giușcă, dar acesta a mai văzut un alt film frumos colorat, în care un tânăr afla abia la vârsta majoratului că, de fapt, părinții l-au înlocuit din greșeală în timpul unor întâmplări stranii care au avut loc în frageda lui pruncie.
„ Iată deci că nimic nu e imposibil în viață, nici o minune nu-i exclusă” își zise Gough, fiind convins că totul depinde numai de imaginația destinului, pe care — credea tot mai mult — nu strică să-l ajuți, dându-i idei.
Obișnuia, mai nou, să se antreneze în fiecare zi, în afară de marți, după ce se trezea, mai rămânea o vreme în pat și-și imagina cum va fi ,,după aceea“, adică după ce va primi averea; se scula ca un somnambul și își concentra gândurile în visul său. De obicei își revenea brusc în realitate după vreo două ore. Atunci rătăcea prin oraș cu intenția de a face rost de banii necesari pentru „condițiile“ care-l stimulau să viseze în continuare.
La început, atunci când mai avea bani, se mai îmbăta, făcea scandal sau se bătea cu alți visători. Cu timpul, însă, deveni liniștit, nu mai tulbura pe nimeni. Şedea pe locul lui obișnuit și privea în gol.
Într-o seară, atât de deprins cu el, barmanul nici nu mai băgă de seamă când îl încuie în local. Dimineața îl găsi în aceeași poziție. Într-altă zi, un cetățean cu ochelari, un neobișnuit al casei, intrând în bar, confundându-l pe Gough cu un cuier, își agăță de urechea lui stângă pălăria. Dar cel mai surprins a fost, într-o seară, personalul barului când, pregătindu-se să măture, încercând să pună scaunele întoarse pe mese observă că nu-1 poate desprinde pe Gough de locul în care a concrescut. Așa că s-a pus cu acuitate problema ce să se facă în continuare cu el. Cineva a propus să fie folosit ca mobilier decorativ, dar au fost opuneri pentru că ar fi creat dificultăți la inventar. După aceea, cine¬va a remarcat că ,,dânsul” mai mănâncă și, deci, trebuie hrănit. Din ce fonduri?
După ce scaunele au fost întoarse și puse pe mese, s-a sperat că măcar schimbându-și poziția, Gough va vedea altfel lucrurile. Dar zadarnic. Concrescența lui cu scaunul a devenit, pe zi ce trecea, tot mai perfectă, încât după puțin timp nici n-a mai putut fi deosebit de mobilă. Doar că dacă vărsa cineva din greșeală puțin alcool pe tăblia scaunului, acesta absorbea cu repeziciune lichidul.
Fu uitat cu totul și, după ani, nimeni nu și-a mai putut explica fenomenul care a avut loc într-o dimineață, când un istoric de artă, așezându-se pe scaunul în care concrescuse Gough și, citind un vechi articol despre tânărul minunat care a moștenit o avere neașteptată, scaunul începu să geamă.
Așa că mobilierul a fost înlocuit, iar Revelionul îl veți putea petrece, fără nici o grijă și în acest local minunat și cu prețuri promoționale.

Gough was unanimously considered a highly educated man. He travelled extensively, knew many foreign words, and knew where to find cheaper women’s stockings.
That year, he went on a trip with an organized group. They visited the whole city together. First the art museum, then the history museum, then the natural science museum, then a few house museums, and finally some industrial, economic, curiosity and other collections of things worth seeing. In the following days, they visited churches, historical monuments and major economic sites.
Continuing the program, they went on excursions in the surrounding area, along the river and on the hills around the city. Then they went to the theatre, the opera and the philharmonic. They didn’t go to the cinemas because you can see movies at home. In the evenings and mornings, they ate at different restaurants, and at lunch, always at a different restaurant. Taking advantage of the warm days, they went to the beach and the seaside. They also visited two model schools, the university, and a hospital. Exceptionally, they were allowed to witness an appendicitis operation and the automatic milking of a pedigree calf on a cattle farm.
On the thirteenth day, they visited the cemetery. The funeral was scheduled for a famous actress who committed suicide for sentimental reasons. The crowd of mourners was joined by a group of hikers. Because of the epidemic, seven more funerals were scheduled that day. The pace of the burials had therefore accelerated, and the various caskets and wreaths were mixed up. All the processions were blocked by a hearse, for the time being empty, because, although the doctors assured that „there was no hope”, the man who was to occupy the coffin had only been in a coma for three days. Waiting for the dead man, the crowd swelled the ranks of those watching the cycle tour pass the cemetery. Unfortunately, just as the cyclists arrived and an ambulance was bringing the body of the expected dead man, the touring cyclists ran out of time, as they were scheduled to attend the modern graphics exhibition. Attempting to exit the cemetery gate, the bus of the hikers hit the ambulance, causing a scuffle among the cyclists. The accompanying cars braked on the pavement, and people swarmed over each other in the cemetery, while frightened hearse horses galloped away.
Gough regretted that the trip would unfortunately end the very next day, and there was no time left to visit the places that bore the vestiges of these tragic incidents.
But he sold his belongings well and planned a trip to the Franz Joseph Islands for the following year.

It had all crystallized in Gough’s mind after he saw the eighth film in which a young man inherits a colossal fortune from some parents whom he meets by chance only after many grief-stricken adventures. As a result, he hypothesized that it would not be out of the question for him to end up with a similar fortune. It’s true that his parents had divorced a long time ago and that they didn’t have many castles to leave him, but he saw another beautifully colored film, in which a young man learns only at the age of majority that, in fact, his parents replaced him by mistake during some strange events that took place in his early childhood.
„So nothing is impossible in life, no miracle is excluded,” Gough said to himself, convinced that everything depends only on the imagination of destiny, which – he thought more and more – it doesn’t hurt to help by giving it ideas.
He used, nowadays, to train every day, except on Tuesdays, after he got up, he would stay in bed for a while longer and imagine how it would be „afterwards,” that is, after he got the fortune; he would get up like a sleepwalker and concentrate his thoughts on his dream. He usually came back to reality after a couple of hours. Then he would wander around the city with the intention of getting the money needed for the „conditions” that stimulated him to keep dreaming.
At first, when he had money left, he would get drunk, get into a fight or fight with other dreamers. But as time went by, he became quiet, no longer troubling anyone. He sat in his usual place and stared blankly. One evening, so used to him, the barman doesn’t even notice when he locked him in. In the morning he found him in the same position. The other day, a bespectacled citizen, a stranger to the house, entering the bar, mistaking Gough for a coat hanger, clutched his hat to his left ear. But it was the bar staff who were most surprised one evening when, preparing to sweep up, they tried to put the chairs back on the tables and noticed that they couldn’t get Gough out of his seat.
So, the question of what to do with him next was acutely considered. Someone suggested that it be used as decorative furniture, but there were objections because it would create inventory difficulties. One evening, so used to him, the barman doesn’t even notice when he locked him in. In the morning he found him in the same position.
