A BALKAN GEM WHERE CULTURE AND TRADITIONS HAVE DEEP HISTORICAL ROOTS
Bulgaria is one of the Balkans’ gems well known for its great cultural heritage, music, food, its amazing monasteries numbering 350, mineral springs, beautiful long Black Sea coast, magnificent nature and good schools and universities.
It has ten UNESCO World Heritage Sites (seven cultural and three natural) which show at its best its long history and achievements that are of great value to humanity. This Balkan country is also very rich in traditional, cultural heritage spread over seven distinctive cultural areas, each of them with unique characteristics of its own.
In times past, all of them have had important part in peoples lives as a significant social factor and part of people’s identity and their belonging to particular area.
Traditional customs, musical instruments, folk songs and dances, proverbs, linguistic features, unique dishes and traditional costumes were like identity cards of regions and areas.
Bulgarian traditional dresses are amongst the most beautiful of the Balkans attires. Their colours, ancient designs, elaborate embroidery and overall beauty give them a special place.
Nowadays such diverse and attractive folk dresses can be seen at national and international folk festivals but many individuals also have them as part of their homes and on special occasions they proudly wear them showing how tradition and cultural heritage is still an important part of everyday life in Bulgaria.
