The beautiful old city of Sibiu in Romania, in the southern part of historical eastern European region of Transylvania, is proud holder of ancient mingled traditions of Hungarians, Romanians and Saxon Germans. The whole region is famous for its stunning mountainous landscapes, traditional picturesque villages, medieval towns with fortresses and castles and centuries old traditions and handicrafts which can be seen there even today.
One of these crafts is pottery that is still very alive and popular in this region with many artisans and pottery workshops in villages around Sibiu. Knowing the importance of pottery making history and tradition for this area, every year the municipality of Sibiu organizes Sibiu Pottery Fair, the oldest event in this historic place.
This pottery fair is held every year on September 1 and 2 in Sibiu’s Large Square in the center of town where a big selection of traditional and contemporary potteries brought here directly from pottery makers and artisans is on display.
During the fair they also have free workshops for anyone who wishes to know more how clay is prepared, shaped and how they can be hand painted using traditional colors and patterns. Pottery plays an important role in Romanian culture and tradition and is still very popular and present in the present life of Romanian people.
Due to its diverse geography and different influences during its history, there are many important and well known schools and styles of pottery making each with its own particular designs and shapes of clay items whose production secrets are passed from one generation to another.
The city of Sibiu pays its respect to this ancient tradition of pottery making and high skills of pottery artisans of its region with this Fair promoting and preserving its great heritage for generation to come.
